On the smoothness of value functions and the existence of optimal strategies in diffusion models

چکیده
Studies of dynamic economic models often rely on each agent having a smooth value function and a well-defined optimal strategy. For time-homogeneous optimal control problems with a one-dimensional diffusion, we prove that the corresponding value function must be twice continuously differentiable under Lipschitz, growth, and non-vanishing-volatility conditions. Under similar conditions, the value function of any optimal stopping problem is shown to be (once) continuously differentiable. We also provide sufficient conditions, based on comparative statics and differential methods, for the existence of an optimal control in the sense of strong solutions. The results are applied to growth, experimentation, and dynamic contracting settings. © 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. JEL classification: C61; C73; D86; O40

On the Smoothness of Value Functions and the Existence of Optimal Strategies∗
In economic models where uncertainty is driven by a diffusion process, the smoothness of agents’ value functions and the existence of optimal strategies play a crucial role in the analysis. This paper shows, firstly, that the value function for the optimal control of any timehomogeneous, one-dimensional diffusion is twice continuously differentiable under Lipschitz, growth, and non-vanishing vo...
متن کاملOn the Smoothness of Value Functions
In dynamic models driven by diffusion processes, the smoothness of the value function plays a crucial role for characterizing properties of the solution. However, available methods to ensure such smoothness have limited applicability in economics, and economists have often relied on either model-specific arguments or explicit solutions. In this paper, we prove that the value function for the op...

Introduction: Desert ecosystem management includes a set of multiple management measures taken with the aim of optimal control of desertification phenomenon and reducing the economical, social and environmental losses. The issues related to the management of desert areas are complex matters because of the existence of multiple decision-making criteria and indices and there are several solutions...
متن کاملForecasting Crude Oil prices Volatility and Value at Risk: Single and Switching Regime GARCH Models
Forecasting crude oil price volatility is an important issues in risk management. The historical course of oil price volatility indicates the existence of a cluster pattern. Therefore, GARCH models are used to model and more accurately predict oil price fluctuations. The purpose of this study is to identify the best GARCH model with the best performance in different time horizons. To achieve th...
متن کاملProcess Improvement of Experimental Measurements Using D-optimal Models
In this paper, the application of D-optimal models, as an alternative to response surface models (RS models) for design of experiment (DOE) was examined. Two D-optimal models for tilt-rotors in the wind tunnel experiment, as a form of quadratic functions, were generated based on a chosen optimality criterion. This optimality criterion was used to generate the optimized sampled points in the des...
